[#6] Caring Moms: Expectations vs. Reality

Date: 24th October 2019

Venue: Lecture Theatre 13

This workshop was presented by Ms. Shera, co-founder of Caring Moms. Caring Moms was founded in April 2016 with the aim of creating an ecosystem for the targeted disadvantaged and displaced individuals, mainly women in the community to develop and grow their entrepreneurial skills. It is now an entrepreneurial development platform that connects mothers and women alike to a network of individuals and corporations, providing them access to a wide range of opportunities, skills, and guidance, empowering them to be economically independent. Ms. Shera begin by telling us her story about how she started this community/business for stay home mothers, working mothers and single mothers to help each other out.

I find the purpose of this community very inspiring as there are so many underprivileged single mothers and stay home mothers nowadays that are in need of support. This platform empowers mothers who have had to quit their jobs and are busy taking care of their children to explore their growing hobbies into little businesses and still have the flexibility to take care of their children at the same time.

Ms. Shera mentioned that an event does not necessarily need a marketing budget for it to be successful but strongly believes that audience engagement is essential in order to reach a specific target market. A successful event in general is created by having your audiences being constantly involved while enjoying their time throughout the event. This would automatically encourage them to capture photos and videos from the event to share it on social media platforms such as Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. From there, you will be able to evaluate the success of the event by measuring the social media reach and engagement on your online posts.

Moving on, Ms Shera has also brought up the importance of resourceful by relating it to their recent Deepavali event that was held at Glo Damansara Mall. She explains the reality of organising an event with a low budget and time constraints. Organising the event in a mall that does not have much human traffic flow would bring in crowd which could benefit the mall. In return, Caring Moms was able to get a lower rental fee to organise their event there. I find this to be a great way to negotiate when dealing with a minimal budget on hand. While most people believe that with an unlimited amount of resources or a whole lot of money can potentially move mountains, it also does not mean that events with smaller budgets are going to be less impactful and successful. With a tight budget, you can still get things done and make a strong impression and get your message across to your audience.

Overall, I feel that this workshop was not as interesting and exciting as the previous talks but I could still gain some key points that could be used in the event industry. Other than that, I realised that Caring Moms is not just a platform for single and underprivileged mothers, but it is also a platform for all women who are looking to enhance their financial and economic independence to help their families.
